Sleep Apnea

I have been doing more research about what TO DO and what NOT TO DO to help people suffering or taking sleep apnea it in the first place.

According to an article at www. livestrong.org - it is mainly middle aged people who are overweight or obese that are more at risk of developing this condition, but as we already know, some children are also suffering from sleep apnea and according to the figures they are increasing, mainly due to being overweight and not getting any exercise.

If you have a healthy body weight and live a healthy lifestyle including getting plenty of exercise, you cut down the chances of developing sleep apnea greatly.

Sleeping on your side is better than being on your back as this contributes to snoring.  Taking certain medications and alcohol before going to bed can in fact trigger the sleep apnea and make it worse.  Of course smoking also comes into the equation - don't smoke, then you are less likely to have sleep apnea.

If you have a healthy body weight, then try to maintain it.  The longer you look after yourself, the healthier you will be and less likely to take certain conditions as you get older.

The Down Side of Using CPAP

I was speaking to my friend today who suffers from Sleep Apnea.

I mentioned that I had a new site on Sleep Apnea and about all the research I had been doing to aid me with my blogs.

For Kate, one of the worst aspects, apart from having the condion, is using the CPAP device.

She told me, "In the mornings it is terrible.  When I get up the mask is all twisted and I have these marks over my face from where it has been digging in".  My reply was, "I think it is time you tried the Sleep Apnea Exercise Programme".

Sleep Apnea and ADD

Many patients with sleep apnea or insomnia also have attention deficit disorder.

People who have difficulty sleeping at night or staying awake during the day can suffer from more than sleep apnea.  These can include ADD, neuromuscular and psychiatric conditions, as well as  memory loss, depression, obesity, dyslexia and illiteracy.

This is not to say that everyone who has sleep apnea WILL experience these other problems, but they can be susceptible to other conditions depending on the severity of the sleep apnea.

Check out the link below to access a programme that has had amazing results with the Sleep Apnea Exercise Programme:

Sleep Apnea

For OSA sufferers, I have listed below some sleeping tips which can help:

  • Go to bed only when you feel sleepy
  • If you do not fall asleep within 20 minutes, get up and do something foring until you feel sleepy
  • Do not have long siestas (ie more than 30 minutes
  • Try to go to bed at the same time - develop rituals for going to bed
  • Use your bed only for sleeping or having sex.  Avoid watching TV in the bedroom
  • Avoid taking caffeine, nicotine or alcohol for at least 4 - 6 hours prior to going to bed
  • Ensure that your bedroom is quiet and comfortable
  • Use sunlight and physical activity to synchronise your biological clock
Goodnight!

Sleep Apnea

My friend Dawn was diagnosed last year with obstructive sleep apnea after also being treated for chronic pulmonary disease (COPD).  Dawn has been a good friend for many years and it was quite distressing to see her suffering from mainly what we originally thought was intermittent sleep which can often be the start of the menopause, plus she was over-weight.

However, as her symptoms got worse, she felt it was time to see her GP, and after several tests and consultations, she was finally diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea.

She was off work long term because of her additional respiratory problems.  She would be in bed at night and constantly be waking up.  Dawn says that the condition has affected her life in a wide sense, and that her memory has also suffered as a result of her sleep apnea.

Over time, Dawn's experience with sleep apnea triggered off my curiosity about what other people were experiencing (as symptoms can vary) and mainly to ascertain what treatments were out there.

I am constantly browsing the internet for more information about sleep apnea and have found some great reference books on the subject.

Symptons of Sleep Apnea

Here is some more information about Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Symptoms can include:
  • Severe daytime sleeepiness is the main symptom.  To start with, sufferers only feel sleepy during activities such as reading, watching television or driving on motorways, but when the sleepiness gets worse, it begins to interfere with most activities, with sufferers falling asleep while talking, eating and standing
  • Disruptive sleep
  • Waking up often during the night
  • Having headaches in the morning
  • People with the condition do not always know that they actually have it.  Often it is their patner who notices that they are snoring heavily and/or have interrupted breathing
It is most important that people who think they might have OSA go to their GP to get diagnosed as there is a risk of a range of health problems including high blood pressure, and therefore some people with OSA may be at increased risk of having heart attacks and strokes.  They are also more at risk of having road traffic accidents, which is why it is necessary that they get diagnosed as early as possible

It should be noted, that people who are over-weight are more at risk of developing sleep apnea.

Childhood Sleep Apnea

It has become a widely accepted fact that childhood sleep apnea is just as much of a reality as adult sleep apnea.  But the fact of the matter is, children can suffer from obstructive sleep apnea to the same degree that adults do, and it can have an adverse effect on their quality "awake life", and if the symptoms are more severe, it can possibly contribute to development delays in a child.

Sometimes a child's inability to concentrate can indeed be a sign of a more severe condition, but let's face it - sometimes it's just the fact that a kid is a kid!

However, many parents are concerned about what the long term effects might be for a child that suffers from sleep apnea .... these cannot be tied down as 100% certain, but there are concerns about development delays as well as the possibility of certain physical disorders such as hypertension developing over time due to the irregularity of bodily functions that can be brought on due to lack of solid refreshing sleep over a prolonged period of time.
